Rest in Peace, Vile Rat

Today, the Alea Iacta Est gaming community mourns the loss of an intelligent and interesting man named Sean Smith, who was a U.S. Foreign Service Information Management Officer and one of the Americans killed in yesterday’s attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

He was better known as Vile rat to our EVE Online players; one of the top diplomats and public figures of the Goonswarm Federation, a former member of the Council of Stellar Management (CSM), as well as a talented EVE spai.

The loss of a member of the online gaming community is tragic, especially when it’s someone you’ve spent time with in fleets and Jabber channels.  EVE Online players may repeat the slogan, “EVE is real” with tongue firmly in cheek, but few will doubt the substance and persistence of the friendships that develop in that universe.

Our deepest sympathy goes to his wife, children, colleagues, and friends.  New Eden has lost a star and the vast expanse of virtual space that exists within the public Internet seems a little more empty tonight.
