The axe falls. IGN and EA hit with lay offs

As reported on Polygon,

IGN the gaming media and news site and Electronic Arts have both announced lay offs.

Effective immediately IGN has let go an unspecified number of editorial employees.  Along with this the have shut down 1up.com, GameSpy.com and UGO.com.

EA has laid off employees in Los Angeles and Montreal citing a need for “console transition” and there are now confirmed reports that Visceral Games has been shut down entirely.
